The new Museum of Nantes History, awarded the Musée de France quality mark, is based on a double heritage: the Castle and the collections are the focus of an historical discourse and display choices.
The scientific and cultural programme, developed from the concept "Nantes and its history" inspiration for the dialogue between the Castle and its museum exhibits, is the result of a collaborative project led by Marie-Hélène Jouzeau, Chief Heritage Curator and Director of the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany.
The Curation team, led by Bertrand Guillet, Chief Heritage Curator and Krystel Gualdé Curation Officer, prepared a visitor scenario for the Castle and the museum and was responsible for the study, selection, restoration and enrichment of the collections on display. The team also wrote the audiovisual and multimedia content, produced by Christophe Courtin.
The Curation team was supported throughout the programme project by the members of the Museum's Scientific Council, composed of historians specialising in the history of Nantes, the Nantes area and Brittany, and experts on museology*. They participated in the planning and decision-making, validating the structure and content, and making a decisive contribution to the most important choices, often the most problematic.
The Nantes History Museum sets down markers and asks questions. It is designed not as a "knowledge showcase" but as a place of learning, alive and interactive, in which ownership lies with the visitor.
The Curation team worked closely with the architect Jean-Francis Bodin responsible for the museum design.
